Modular origami is a paper folding technique involving the use of several sheets to allow creating larger and more complex structures which would be impossible to make with only one sheet of paper. In this variation of origami, the sheets are folded into modules that properly connected , usually by inserting a flap of one to the pocket of another, form an integral flat or three-dimensional figure.
Some experts do not include this form to traditional origami , because it departs from the basic rules about creating a model of a single page. That’s why sometimes you can hear the modular origami is classified as a so-called multipart origami. Another deviation from the traditional art of paper folding is the frequent use of rectangles to create the various parts of the figures. However, modular origami is not based on breaking the rules of traditional art paper – it is still not acceptable to use glue and cut modules. Figure shown below was created fron 30 modules, which begins with the creation of rectangles whose aspect ratio is 3:1
As previously mentioned, modular origami can be divided into flat and three-dimensional figures. The firs ones include various types of pads, discs and rings. In contrast, three-dimensional designs are all polyhedra, or irregular spatial figures. As examples of such models of the figures can be used those placed underneath.
What is needed to create modular figures? For sure, you’ll need intuition, which sometimes can help you find the right connection. The ability of spatial vision, which gives a general idea of the final look of the figure is also useful. And absolutely essential feature- patience. It is particularly useful because folding dozens of identical modules can be boring, laborious and time-consuming.
So I invite you to create modular origami and announce placing video tutorial showing the proccess of folding interesting, but a simple figure.
